Spring Term - Le Printemps
Bonjour à tous!
We started off this term learning how french children celebrate Epiphany or 'La Fête des rois' including singing traditional songs and using our dictionaries to translate key words. We have then been concentrating on learning the days of the week, months of the year and how to say the date and also our birthdays in french. The children have learned to say, read, order and are now trying to write/spell ( without prompts!) these words in french, including remembering our numbers! We often use songs from the internet to help boost our memories as it is often easier to remember words when they are linked to a tune. (See the links below). Please feel free to practise with these songs at home.
Year 5 had a fabulous day on our European Day of Languages when the children truly excelled themselves as they had been set quite a challenge to learn some Russian! They had such fun learning to recognise the russian alphabet and to hear the different sounds the letters made. They made some amazing videos where the children carried out conversations in Russian in front of Red Square ( using a green screen). Quite amazing!!
For the next half term, we will be working on 'Je me présente' - a mini project for the children to describe themselves, their families, their likes and dislikes. They will be using the grammar we have touched on so far and will be introduced to french verbs ( avoir - to have, être - to be and regular -er verbs such as aimer and jouer). We will aim to carry out interviews with each other so the children can ask and respond to questions and use all 4 key skills ( reading, speaking, listening and writing).

Autumn term - L'Automne
Year 5 have been working really hard in French from the beginning of the year, way back in September.
The Autumn term was mainly focused on key language learning skills -
- the french alphabet (sounds and pronunciation)
- numbers 1- 69
- using a bi-lingual dictionary
- greetings
- gender ( masculine and feminine)
- nouns ( singular and plural)
- articles ( definite (le,la,l',les) and indefinite (un, une, des))
We have used songs and activities/games to embed this grammar and the children have grown in confidence enormously. It is really great to see them 'having a go' and to see their enthusiasm in lessons.
